Everything You Need to Know About Renting Our Broadkill Beach Facility
Hidden Gem With Rustic Charm
When people say they want to "get away from it all" they usually settle for getting somewhere new full of all the regular tourist trappings but not really "away" from much of anything.
After all, who has time to research and discover remote, pristine locations?
Don't worry, we've already done that work for you. Our property is located along Delaware Bay in a protected area where commercial development is impossible.
Most days you can walk on Broadkill Beach and look up and down at the miles of shoreline in either direction and see no one at all. Just you, the migrating birds, the occasional dolphin, and all the other protected wildlife.
All within two hours of Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC.
CHEF'S KITCHEN
Our chef's kitchen has a professional gas cooking suite installed featuring grill, griddle, six burners, two ovens, overhead lights, sprinklers, and full ventilation. Accompanied by three sinks, an island, custom-built pantry that pulls out from inside the wall, a cook's library, and breakfast bar.
(PRIVATE) BEACH
Although it is technically a public beach, the beach you access one block away is functionally private. It's rare to encounter more than five people there, and usually there won't be anybody at all. Broadkill community rules allow fires on the beach, alcoholic beverages on the beach, camping, and use of off road vehicles. You must adhere to dune protection and safety at all times.
OUTDOOR FUN
Tired of our books, games, and movies? Take advantage of our on-site kite collection, boogie boards, beach chairs, crab nets, sandcastle blocks and other sand toys, or rent bicycles, kayaks, or boats nearby. If you prefer bird watching or hunting we are in the middle of a wildlife preserve, and The Rookery golf course is less than 10 minutes away.
OTHER FEATURES
Create something savory on our outdoor gas grill, stargaze with our telescope, monitor our weather station, keep fit with our yoga mats, make room for youngsters with our trundle bed, bunk beds, and crib, use the computer on our upstairs landing if you forgot your laptop, stay warm on cold nights with the fully-stocked fireplace, borrow from our collection of hats to keep the sun out of your eyes, and more.
The entire family was thrilled with the Broadkill Writers Retreat house. The picture of my grandson sums up how we all felt! Large enough for six adults and 2 active grandkids, none of us felt like we were cramped. Everything worked fine and we encountered no problems during our stay. Check-in was a breeze…With easy access to the beach, plenty of parking, a breezy screened porch and large open deck, everyone got a full dose of summer.

ABOUT
We offer the comforts of home in a secluded, pristine beach environment designated as a protected area — so you never have to deal with crowds, and can always enjoy the natural beauty and wildlife of the Delaware Bay.
Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge is a 10,144-acre refuge officially established in 1963 to provide protection for threatened and endangered species, as well as many neo-tropical migrating bird species. Prime Hook’s habitat features include salt marsh, freshwater marsh, ponds and impoundments, wooded swamps and upland grasslands and forest. Hundreds of native plant and animal species thrive in this mosaic of these diverse cover types that provide habitat for 308 species of birds, 51 species of fish, 45 species of reptiles and amphibians, 37 species of mammals, and an array of rare insect and plant species.
The closest town, Milton, is only a 10-minute drive away and is full of shops and restaurants. Established in 1672, and operating under several names until 1807 when it was renamed after English poet John Milton, this old shipbuilding community has a historic district full of restored Colonial and Victorian houses, ranging from Gothics with turrets to those with peaked roofs trimmed with gingerbread lace molding.
Further down Route 1, about 20 minutes from Broadkill, is Lewes, a quaint seaside community known for specialty shops, historic buildings, advanced health facilities, and its own beach. Continuing south on Route 1, 30 minutes from Broadkill you next come to Rehoboth, a large beach vacation destination with a boardwalk and more shopping and entertainment options than you could take in during a week’s stay.

Testimonials
"We have been to Broadkill Resort several times over the past few years and, no matter the season, the property is cozy and relaxing and just feels good. I suppose hygge is the word for it. The house is spacious yet there is a sense of privacy in its layout.…The walk to the beach is short and along an established path over the dunes. We have yet to see the beach crowded, even in the midst of summer. So many wonderful details (old-fashioned gas stove and metal tea kettle, yoga mats in every room, puzzles and games and hundreds of books and audiobooks available for use) make this a destination we return to time after time. A true retreat."

"I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Firstly Jennifer, the owner, was particularly helpful. The location was great and so close for getting to and from the beach. Property was perfect — clean, charming, airy & breezy, large, with loads of nice touches like boogey boards, giant outdoor shower, cupula, super-stocked kitchen, and amazing diner-style griddle/stove. We spent morning and evenings enjoying the fabulous covered porch area!"

"We loved our stay at the Broadkill Writers Resort!! Books on display in every room, plenty of room for the 6 of us, and close proximity to the beach. Took the dogs to the beach every day, and our teens went to the more popular beaches down the coast, just a short ride away. We loved riding our bikes and running through the "main" road of Broadkill, which seemed like it had more foot traffic than cars. We would certainly be happy to go back next year!"
